Abstract

Il s’agit de mettre l’accent sur l’apport d’Antonin Laffage à la musicologie francophone du monde arabe, à travers ses propres travaux et sa contribution à l’œuvre du Baron d’Erlanger. Antonin Laffage (1858-1926), artiste aux multiples facettes, peu connu des musiciens et des musicologues, compte parmi les personnages incontournables de la vie musicale occidentale de Tunis (de 1882 à 1926). Il était à la fois musicien et musicologue, enseignant, co-fondateur de l’école de musique de Tunis, chef d’orchestre, compositeur, collectionneur d’instruments de musique et éditeur.  À partir de 1911, Erlanger lui confia de nombreuses tâches : l’étude de documents, articles et ouvrages anciens et la réalisation de synthèses sur les musiques : égyptienne, hébraïque, grecque, chinoise, persane et arabe ; la collecte de répertoires, de données et d’informations, en rapport avec la pratique de certaines traditions musicales ; la transcription des répertoires musicaux collectés et la sélection des pièces qui serviront d’illustrations musicales. L’étude des archives papiers du baron d’Erlanger, montre combien ce personnage, ô combien occulté, s’est investi dans cette entreprise. Certains documents montrent explicitement comment Laffage fut à l’origine de l’intérêt que porta Erlanger à la musique arabe et qu’il fut à la fois l’instigateur, le conseiller et le maître d’œuvre de tout le projet initial du Baron d’Erlanger.

The aim is to focus on Antonin Laffage’s contribution to Francophone musicology in the Arab world, through his own work and his contribution to the work of Baron d’Erlanger. Antonin Laffage (1858-1926), a multi-faceted artist, little known to musicians and musicologists, is one of the key figures in the western musical life of Tunis (1882-1926). He was a musician and musicologist, teacher, co-founder of the Tunis School of Music, conductor, composer, collector of musical instruments and publisher. From 1911, Erlanger entrusted him with many tasks: the study of documents, articles and ancient works and the realization of syntheses on music: Egyptian, Hebrew, Greek, Chinese, Persian and Arabic. The collection of directories, data and information related to the practice of certain musical traditions. The transcription of the music directories collected and the selection of the pieces that will serve as musical illustrations. The study of Baron d’Erlanger’s paper archives shows how much this character, oh how much obscured, invested himself in this enterprise. Some documents explicitly show how Laffage was at the origin of Erlanger’s interest in Arabic music and that he was at the same time the instigator, the counselor and the master of all the initial project of the Baron d Erlanger.
