Abstract

La collection de disques des moines de l'Abbaye de Solesmes est un témoignage précieux d'une tradition d'interprétation chantée et enregistrée dans un même lieu pendant presqu'un siècle. Frédéric Billiet a choisi d'examiner la production des disques de Solesmes en posant deux questions : (1) que révèle la discographie sur la tradition d'interprétation de Solesmes ? (2) quelle est l'influence de cette discographie sur les interprètes du XX^e siècle ? En effet, l'écoute des disques, enregistrés sur une si longue durée par une même communauté, permet, d'une part, de discerner les caractéristiques de ce style d'interprétation de Solesmes qui s'est imposé au monde pendant le XX^e siècle, et d'autre part, de percevoir les différences avec les chants notés publiés par cette Abbaye. Sans le disque, la simple analyse des livres de Solesmes ne rendrait pas compte de la réalité du chant de Solesmes et de ses modes de transmission. L'influence de cette transmission sur les interprètes est ensuite étudiée en distinguant deux catégories : les pratiquants interprétant le chant comme une prière chantée et les interprètes d'un patrimoine musical. L'étude cherchera à dissiper la confusion au sujet du chant de Solesmes qui, par le disque, a été retenu comme un modèle musicologique alors qu'il devrait toujours être considéré comme un chant monastique dont la diffusion sert d'abord et avant tout la prière qu'il porte.

The record collection of the monks of Solesmes Abbey is a valuable testimony of an interpretative tradition sung and recorded in the same place for almost a century. Frédéric Billiet chose to examine the production records of Solesmes with two questions: (1) what reveals the discography on the interpretative tradition of Solesmes? (2) what is the influence of this discography on the performers of the twentieth century? Indeed, listening to the discs, recorded over such a long time by the same community, allows on the one hand, to discern the characteristics of this style of interpretation of Solesmes that imposed itself among the world during the twentieth century and secondly, to perceive the differences with the published songs recorded by the Abbey. Without the disk, a simple analysis of Solesmes books would not reflect the reality of the song of Solesmes and its modes of transmission. The influence of this transmission on the performers is then studied by distinguishing two categories: practicing singing the song as sung prayer and performers of a musical heritage. The study will seek to dispel confusion about the song of Solesmes, which by the disc, was selected as a musicological model when it should always be considered as a monastic chant whose distribution is first and foremost prayer it wears.
