Abstract

Bien que l'on exige d'une musique savante d'être exécutée devant un auditoire connaisseur et cultivé dans les circonstances particulières, garantissant les conditions d'écoute appropriées, le muqām de la République d'Azerbaïdjan, estimé savant ou classique par les ethnomusicologues, se présentait tout au long des deux siècles précédents dans les fêtes de mariage, une circonstance évoquant normalement la réjouissance publique et qui va à l'encontre de toute sorte d'écoute concentrée et attentive de la musique. Pourtant, loin d'être une particularité surprenante qui puisse mettre en doute nos outils classificatoires, une étude approfondie de la circonstance en question montre bien que l'association du muqām et de la fête est devenue possible non pas parce que le premier ne correspondait pas avec la catégorie supposée mais, tout au contraire, parce que la deuxième, la fête, ne remplissait pas ses fonctions habituelles et qu'elle était étrangère à la réjouissance publique.

Although an art music is required to be performed before a knowledgeable and cultivated audience in particular circumstances, assuring the appropriate listening conditions, the muqām of the Republic of Azerbaijan, estimated art or classical music by ethnomusicologists, was presented throughout the two previous centuries in wedding festivities, a circumstance normally bringing to mind public exultation and which is contrary to any kind of concentrated and attentive music listening. Yet, far from being a surprising feature which can put in doubt our classificatory tools, an in-depth study of the circumstance in question shows that the association of muqām and the festivity has become possible not because the former did not correspond to the supposed category but, to the contrary, because the latter did not fulfill its usual function and that it was unconcerned by public exultation.
