Abstract

Tout en étant le premier auteur à proposer une étude musicologique exhaustive de la tradition du chant syro-maronite, le père Louis Hage (1938-2010) a œuvré également à bâtir des ponts inventifs et originaux entre la musicologie médiévale francophone et la musicologie orientaliste ou ethnomusicologique religieuse également francophone. Grâce à sa connaissance approfondie de la tradition syro-maronite et aux outillages musicologiques acquis en Sorbonne, doublés d’une connaissance sérieuse des travaux des bénédictins spécialistes du chant grégorien, Louis Hage a réussi à élaborer le premier discours systématique et historique digne de ce nom, permettant l’instauration d’une musicologie francophone du chant traditionnel liturgique de l’Église Maronite. Cette visée intégrative et globalisante reflète éloquemment son double profil de moine et de musicologue ayant consacré toute sa vie à l’étude de la tradition musicale orante de son Église et à la préservation contre vents et marées de ce legs plus que millénaire. Cet article propose l’ébauche d’une généalogie de l’œuvre de ce moine musicologue francophone, prenant en compte l’ensemble des déterminants historiques, culturels, académiques et religieux qui ont contribué à la constitution de cette importante figure musicologique libanaise et internationale francophone.

While being the first author to offer an exhaustive musicological study of the Syro-Maronite tradition, Father Louis Hage (1938-2010) worked to build inventive and original bridges between francophone medieval musicology and orientalist musicology or also francophone religious ethnomusicological. Thanks to his deep knowledge of the Syro-Maronite tradition and the musicological tools acquired in Sorbonne, coupled with a serious knowledge of the work of Benedictines specialists in Gregorian chant, Louis Hage succeeded in developing the first systematic and historical discourse worthy of the name, allowing the establishment of a francophone musicology of the traditional liturgical chant of the Maronite Church. This integrative and globalizing aim eloquently reflects his dual profile as a religious and musicologist who has devoted his entire life to the study of the musical tradition of the Maronite church and to the preservation through thick and thin of its legacy over a thousand years old. This article proposes an outline of a genealogy of the work of this francophone religious musicologist, taking into consideration all the historical, cultural, academic and religious determinants that have contributed to the constitution of this important Lebanese and international francophone musicological figure.
