Abstract

Sœur Thérèse-Berthe Antar (1932-2016), moniale antonine maronite libanaise, fait partie de la première génération de musicologues universitaires au Liban et est la première femme de ce pays à avoir obtenu un doctorat en musicologie. Sa principale contribution musicologique est la publication d’un livre d’histoire de la musique du Levant et d’une traduction critique en français du Kitāb fī ma’rifat al-anġām wa-šarḥihā (Livre de la connaissance des modes et de leur explication) de Šamsu d-Dīn al-Ṣayḍāwī al-Dimašqī (d.1506), théoricien levantin de la grammaire musicale modale. Cet article présente les éléments d’une prosopographie relative au parcours de cette religieuse musicologue francophone, qui cherche à mieux comprendre comment une moniale maronite libanaise, initialement formée à la musique savante européenne, est devenue une fine experte des anciens traités arabes de théorie musicale et une divulgatrice francophone avisée de la théorie de la grammaire modale du Levant.

Sister Thérèse-Berthe Antar (1932-2016), a Maronite Antonine nun, is part of the first generation of musicologists in Lebanon and is the first woman in that country to have obtained a doctorate in musicology. Her main musicological contribution is the publication of a book on the history of Levantine music and a critical translation into French of \textit{Kitāb fī ma'rifat al-anġām wa-šarḥihā} (Book of the knowledge of modes and their explanation) by Šamsu d-Dīn a-ṣ-Ṣayḍāwī al-Dimašqī (d.1506), a Levantine theorist of modal musical grammar. This article presents the elements of a prosopography relating to the career of this Francophone religious musicologist, which seeks to better understand how a Maronite nun, initially trained in European art music, became a fine expert on ancient Arab treatises on music theory and a wise francophone disseminator of the theory of the modal grammar of the Levant.
